چکیده

We describe a numerical method for calculating the ~311!-dimensional general relativistic hydrodynamics of a coalescing neutron-star binary system. The relativistic field equations are solved at each time slice with a spatial three-metric chosen to be conformally flat. Against this solution to the general relativistic field equations, the hydrodynamic variables and gravitational radiation are allowed to respond. The gravitational radiation signal is derived via a multipole expansion of the metric perturbation to the hexadecapole ( l54) order including both mass and current moments and a correction for the slow-motion approximation. Using this expansion, the effect of gravitational radiation on the system evolution can also be recovered by introducing an acceleration term in the matter evolution. In the present work we illustrate the method by applying this model to evaluate various orbits of two neutron stars with a gravitational mass of 1.45M( near the time of the final merger. We discuss the evidence that, for a realistic neutron-star equation of state, general relativistic effects may cause the stars to individually collapse into black holes prior to merging. Also, the strong fields cause the last stable orbit to occur at a larger separation distance and lower frequency than previously estimated. @S0556-2821~96!01412-9#

Modeling the dynamics of tidally-interacting binary neutron stars up to merger

The data analysis of the gravitational wave signals emitted by coalescing neutron star binaries requires the availability of an accurate analytical representation of the dynamics and waveforms of these systems. We propose an effective-one-body (EOB) model that describes the general relativistic dynamics of neutron star binaries from the early inspiral up to merger. Our EOB model incorporates an...

Relativistic Iron Emission Lines in Neutron Star Low-mass X-ray Binaries as Probes of Neutron Star Radii

Using Suzaku observations of three neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (Ser X−1, 4U 1820−30 and GX 349+2) we have found broad, asymmetric, relativistic Fe K emission lines in all three objects. These Fe K lines can be well fit by a model for lines from a relativistic accretion disk (‘diskline’), allowing a measurement of the inner radius of the accretion disk, and hence an upper limit on the n...

The Innermost Stable Circular Orbit in Compact Binaries

Newtonian point mass binaries can be brought into arbitrarily close circular orbits. Neutron stars and black holes, however, are extended, relativistic objects. Both finite size and relativistic effects make very close orbits unstable, so that there exists an innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO). We illustrate the physics of the ISCO in a simple model problem, and review different techniques ...

Time Evolution of Relativistic Force-Free Fields Connecting a Neutron Star and its Disk

We study the magnetic interaction between a neutron star and its disk by solving the time-dependent relativistic force-free equations. At the initial state, we assume that the dipole magnetic field of the neutron star connects the neutron star and its equatorial disk, which deeply enters into the magnetosphere of the neutron star. Magnetic fields are assumed to be frozen to the star and the dis...
